The concept was popularized by therapist Gary Chapman. The idea is simple: each person feels and shows love in their own way, and many couple misunderstandings come from speaking different languages.
💬 Words of affirmation
Compliments, encouragement and an “I love you” said with intention. People with this language feel harsh criticism deeply, and appreciation even more.
⏳ Quality time
Full attention: talking without phones, doing things together, eye contact. Being in the same room does not count if your mind is elsewhere.
🛠️ Acts of service
Doing things for each other: getting a chore done, solving a problem, taking care of a detail without being asked.
🎁 Receiving gifts
Small tokens that show someone was thinking of you. The value is in the gesture and the meaning, not the price.
🤗 Physical touch
Hugs, holding hands and everyday affection. For people with this language, touch is the fastest way to feel safe.
This is LovUp's own test, based on this concept and on the "Love language" quiz in our app. It is not the official test from the book.
Frequently asked questions
What are the 5 love languages?
It is the idea, popularized by therapist Gary Chapman, that each person feels and shows love differently: words of affirmation, quality time, acts of service, receiving gifts and physical touch.
Is this the official 5 love languages test?
No. It is LovUp's own test, based on that concept and on the Love language quiz in our app. It is meant to start a conversation, not to diagnose.
Can you have more than one love language?
Yes. Almost everyone has a main one with another close behind. When there is a tie, the test shows both.
How do couples take the love language test?
Each of you takes the test and you compare. In the LovUp app you both answer on your own phones and the app shows side by side how each of you prefers to receive love.
Is the test free?
Yes. The test and the main result are free and need no sign-up. Nothing you answer is sent to LovUp.
